We’ve known Carles Querol for quite some time and have followed and admired his music career for years. We got together with him in autumn of 2013 to discuss his new project, 4hiverns, a new phase for Carles after two albums as the lead guitarist and songwriter for First Aid Kit and several tours with Erm.

We listened to a few tracks; while more acoustic than his previous work his signature sound is unmistakable.

He explained that 4hiverns is a very personal project, not only because of what it expresses but because of how it was made, and that after hibernating for several winters of introspective songwriting he was ready to bring the songs to light.

The journey

Carles asked us to express graphically what he does musically.

We imagined Carles spending his winters in a cabin, tucked away writing his songs as the snow begins to fall outside. Just Carles, with his guitar and a bag of some things he brought with him to survive the winter months.

Carles spent his days writing songs and waiting until he could leave the cabin, shovel and axe in hand, to clear the snow and cut firewood. Back at the cabin and between songs Carles would write and sketch in what would become his 4hiverns (four winters) journal.

We wanted to recreate this journal.

We wrote his name, a few quotes and lyrics, and sketches of things that Carles had brought with him on his journey: a knife, a blanket, a backpack, a boot…

Illustrative elements that are always paired with the album name, the consistent style creating an image that tells a store with each new sketch.

The album

We paired the illustrations with photographs that take us to that wintery landscape.

The album is an acoustic and visual journal and each of the images is charged with Carles Querol’s musical winters: a personal journey that can be both heard and seen.
