We often say (and often complain) that schools fail to motivate children to pick up a book; that they fail to instil a love of reading. Which made this project one which we were particularly excited about. Tantàgora, a space that spreads awareness of Catalan literature, got in contact with us to work with them on a traveling exhibition featuring traditional animals from Catalan literature to promote reading among children.

Animal!

This photographic and literary exhibition features a series of photos by Tanit Plana that represent the most well-known animals in Catalan literature. Quotes and texts related to each animal have been superimposed over the images.

Starting point

Tantàgora asked us to design the exhibition’s graphic identity and to handle the art for the pieces.

Our goal: the most animalistic image possible. By using an animal-hair brush to write the name we created a thick, bold, wild and organic logo, the roughness of the bristles coming through with every stroke.

Development

To shine the spotlight on the images themselves and to make the pieces as visible as possible we decided to superimpose the texts.

Hand-written, the texts preserve the organic spirit of the piece when read.

Result

The final exhibit included five pieces featuring five animals: a wolf, shark, toad, eagle and dragon. These were accompanied by a presentation piece in which parts of each animal can be made out through the letters of the Animals! logo.

Over 300 people attended the opening of the exhibition and related events in Bellver de Cerdanya on 7 December 2013.

The exhibit will be displayed at different cultural centres across Catalonia.
