José Gutierrez lives in a small fishing town, in a cabin by the Caribbean, where he works in his own jewellery making workshop. Silver, semi-precious stones, pearls, leather, tropical wood, mother of pearl, tagua, details in gold…he works with all these materials with techniques from high jewellery.

We are talking about Costa Rica because José decided to set himself up there after years of living all over the world. We talked with him about valuing things such as freedom and instincts.

The character behind the collection of jewels and the materials with which he works transmit the idea of adventure and of exploring the world. Phrases from Mark Twain: “Sail away from that safe harbour”.

The world of adventure is an open conceptual element that suggests diverse themes that can be the motifs of future collections. The sea, mountains, forest …

“a smooth sea never made a skilled sailor”

Also unexplored pathways, daring, boldness, seduction, spirit, freedom, emotion, life.

 

Naming
Based on this attitude, we found the concept Wanderlust, a name that means: the strong desire or impulse to wander and explore the world. And the brand name of the company is Wanderlust Co.

A company, a sense of belonging, a manifesto:

1. The world, people and life are all interesting
2. To live is to feel. You don´t feel anything if you are placid.
3. The world is full of interesting things.
4. Improvise, change direction once in a while.
5. Observe, listen. Document your findings. Make photos, take notes.
6. Note down the stories floating around you.
7. Follow your instincts.
8. When you do something, do it will all your sense.
9. Always do something no-one expects of you.
10. Don´t invest in regrets.
Visual
The initial concept takes us into a very rich visual world. The world of adventure that we represent with the illustration of a harbour tavern or a sailor´s tattoo.
The illustration is accompanied by the name or the abbreviation in a fine and elegant typeface just like the product. The combination of illustration and typeface gives form to the logo that will be accompanied by a phrase that describes the brand (Handmade Artisan Jewellery) and quote-slogans with values described and that describe those who take away a piece of WanderLust Co jewellery .
